Fasig-Tipton July's Freshman Sire Showcase proved a resounding success for Darley's young stallions, who were responsible for no fewer than eight of the ten highest-priced lots.
Street Cry’s history-making son Street Sense was responsible for the highest-priced yearling by a first-season sire and the third highest price of the day when hip 52 was knocked down to Whisper Hill Farm for US$250,000. Offered by Taylor Made Sales Agency, the bay colt is out of a winning daughter of the five-time G1 winner Twice The Vice.
The winner of the G1 Haskell Invitational during his three-year-old season, Any Given Saturday (pictured) had one yearling sell during the first day of the sale, realising an impressive US$225,000 to the final bid of Maverick Racing. Consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, the colt is a half-brother to the G3-winning, G1-placed Spring Meadow.
Purchased in partnership with WinStar, the original owners of Any Given Saturday, co-owner Bill Casner stated after the purchase that, “This is a beautiful colt. He reminds us a lot of his daddy.”
Hard Spun also enjoyed a successful sale, having six yearlings sell at an average of just over US$140,000. Heading the draft of the G1-winning son of Danzig was hip 69, the Gainesway consigned half-brother to Stakes winning Forestry filly Queens Plaza, that was knocked down for $190,000. Another of his colts to sell extremely well was hip 100, a bay colt out of the G3-winning Unbridled’s Song mare Rare Gift, which sold for $180,000.
These talented young stallions will all be standing in Australia this year, with Street Sense standing at Kelvinside at a fee of $38,500, and Any Given Saturday and Hard Spun standing at Northwood Park at $13,750 and $22,000 respectively.
As three of the best of an outstanding generation, we like to call them the chosen few and as these sales results demonstrate, their yearlings are pretty choice, too.
