The lightly-raced Pohutukawa drew attention to her future prospects with a storming win in Tuesday’s Listed Desirable Stakes at Flemington.
Ridden in copybook style by William Buick, the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro dropped out to last after drawing wide and travelled kindly at the rear of the field until turning for him.
At the 200m Pohutakawa had got within striking distance and in the run to the line she dominated a quality field of three-year-old fillies.
The James Cummings-trained filly went on to win convincingly, becoming Medaglia d’Oro’s 117th Stakes winner.
Pohutukawa, one of two foals of racing age, and the only one to race, from her dam Lumina, has now won three of her five starts.
