Despite not racing in almost a year, New Trails showed no signs of rust when powering to a two-length victory in the Listed Curlin Stakes at Meydan Racecourse Feb. 18.
It was the first Stakes victory for the Medaglia d’Oro gelding, who had previous placings in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge-Round 3 and G2 Al Maktoum Challenge-Round 2.
New Trails was settled in mid-division along the inside rail through the early stages of the 10-furlong contest. With just over two furlongs to run, jockey Fernando Jara went to work on New Trails and the gelding began closing in on the front trio of Tailor’s Row, Dubai Icon and Real World. New Trails took command a furlong from home, pulling away to win comfortably by two lengths over Dubai Icon.
New Trails was bred in Kentucky by Darley and is out of Issaqueena, a winning daughter of Mr. Prospector. New Trails is a half-brother to the talented filly Tizaqueena, winner of the G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile and G3 Arlington Matron Stakes.
Medaglia d’Oro is off to a strong start this year, with four Stakes winners thus far. In addition to New Trails, Medaglia d’Oro has sired the Graded Stakes winning trio of Golden Sixty (three straight G1’s, including the Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup), Risk Taking (G3 Withers) and Moonlight d’Oro (G3 Las Virgenes).
Medaglia d'Oro is standing the 2021 breeding season at Jonabell Farm for a fee of $150,000, stands and nurses.
