Midshipman's ships came in, so to speak, at Belterra on June 2 as his daughter Soft Talk and Squid became his latest Black Type with runaway winners at Belterra Park. Squid, like Soft Talk, was winning for the first time in an added-money race when taking the Best of Ohio Diana Stakes.
Breaking from the far outside, Squid quickly moved into second and stayed in that spot until just before the half-mile pole. From there, under strong urging, she pulled away in the stretch to win by five-and-one-half lengths.
Bred in Ohio by her owner/breeder William J. Butler, Squid is the first Stakes winner for her dam, Miss Kew, also bred and owned by Butler. Interestingly, conditioner Mike Maker trained both mother and daughter.
Midshipman's 17% career Black Type horses from starters continues to be among the best in the business - no stallion under $55k can top it. His 25 Black Type horses in 2022 were more than any other stallion under $100k. They included G2 San Diego winner Royal Ship and G3 Pocahontas winner Fun and Feisty, plus two other juvenile Stakes winners.
His 2022 yearlings brought $260k, $230k, $150k, $150k, $135k, $125k, etc.
