Off the heels (hooves) of his recent first career Black Type win at Belmont in June, Medaglia d'Oro's Moretti doubled up that number with an impressive win in the Listed, one and three-quarter mile Birdstone Stakes, at Saratoga on August 2 (Hard Spun's Rocketry finished third). Moretti's performance elevated his sire into rarefied air as he became the all-time leading sire of Black Type winners at Saratoga, a list that shows A. P. Indy in the second slot with 19, and Giant's Causeway, Storm Cat and Danzig rounding out the top five with 16 each.
Unlike his wire-to-wire victory in his first Stakes win, the Flat Out Stakes, Moretti was settled into fourth-place by jockey Javier Castellano up until the one and one-quarter mile mark. He then asked the four-year-old for more and was met with a strong response as Moretti quickened to grab the lead in the turn, and maintained a comfortable margin until the finish.
Moretti was bred in Kentucky by Thor-Bred Stables, LLC. He is out of G1W Rigoletta, dam of G1 Breeders' Cup Mile winner Battle of Midway. Rigoletta is a full sister to Stakes-placed Evening Concerto and a half sister to the dam of G2W Patternrecognition.
Medaglia d'Oro is the sire of 142 lifetime Stakes winners, 25 G1 winners, including 2019 high-level winners Cambier Parc and Higher Power, second in the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup in his 2020 debut.
