Colts Neck Stables LLC’s Goldwood continued her domination of the turf sprint division in the Mid-Atlantic area with a gutsy half-length victory in the $100,000 Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Laurel Park Sept. 21.
The Sensible Lady Turf Dash was the fifth straight Stakes win for the five-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare, who began her winning streak with Monmouth Park’s Politely Stakes in May. After her win in the Politely, Goldwood went on to tally victories in the Unbridled Elaine Stakes, Safely Kept Stakes and Incredible Revenge Stakes, all of which were at Monmouth Park.
Partnered once again by jockey Jose Ferrer, Goldwood showed a willingness to be rated, as she stalked the leader Escapade from second through the early stages of the race. Sweeping around the far turn, Goldwood moved up to engage the leader at the top of the stretch. Kept under a drive by Ferrer, the dark bay mare took the lead, and was able to turn back a late bid by Fire Key to win by a half-length.
Goldwood was bred in Kentucky by her owner and is out of Crimson Maple, a winning daughter of Rahy. Crimson Maple is out the multiple G1 winner and blue hen mare, Maplejinsky, making her a half-sister to Champion Older Mare and Filly Triple Crown winner, Sky Beauty.
Medaglia d’Oro is having yet another superb year in 2019. He is represented by Graded Stakes winners Higher Power (G1 TVG Pacific Classic), Cambier Parc (G1 Del Mar Oaks), Elate (G2 Delaware Handicap, G2 Fleur de Lis), Café Americano (G3 Pucker Up), Majestic Eagle (G3 American Stakes), Golden Award (G3 Shuvee) and Crown Prosecutor (G1 Rosehill Guineas).
