Hard Spun sired the highest-priced offering of any freshman sire at the OBS Spring sale of two-year-olds in training in Florida on Thursday, April 21, when hip number 1094 brought US$675,000. Bred by Hargus and Sandra Sexton in Kentucky, the colt is out of the winning A.P. Indy mare Light From Above. The leading sire overall by average at $250,000, Hard Spun continues to be the second leading sire for two-year-olds in training by average, with Street Sense taking down the top spot.
A two-year-old colt by Hard Spun also topped the Doncaster Breeze Up Sale on Wednesday in England. Consigned by Mocklershill and purchased by Sean Quinn for £140,000 ($232,000), the colt was bred in Kentucky by the partnership of Ben Walden Jr. and Hargus Sexton (breeder of the OBS sale topper mentioned above) and is out of the mare Saudia, a daughter of the dual G1 winner Bint Pasha. Saudia also has a 2010 colt by Darley stallion Street Sense.
G1 King’s Bishop winner Hard Spun and champion Street Sense currently stand for $30,000 and $40,000, respectively, stands and nurses.
