Golden Sixty continued to stake his claim for recognition as the latest champion son Medaglia d’Oro with a brilliant victory in the HK$20 million Hong Kong Derby on Saturday, March 22.
Given plenty to do from the 400m where he was near last, Golden Sixty was still conceding a half-length to the leader and eventual runner-up with 50m to run.
But he mustered another effort to grab the lead two strides from the line and score by a head from Playa Del Puente.
The win was Golden Sixty’s fifth on end and his 10th from his 11 starts.
An Australian-bred four-year-old, Golden Sixty is out of the Distorted Humor mare Gaudeamus and is one of five winners from her seven to race.
Having sold as a yearling for A$120,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, he went through the ring again as a two-year-old the same year in New Zealand where he made NZ$300,000 to the bid of his current trainer Francis Lui.
Golden Sixty was bred by Asco International Pty Ltd of Queensland.
Medaglia d’Oro stood his most recent season at Jonabell Farm, Kentucky.
