Superstar filly Rachel Alexandra once again stepped up to the plate in style and obliterated her rivals in the G1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park. The first-crop daughter of Medaglia d’Oro was recording her fourth Grade One win and her eighth success in a row.
Jumping smartly from the gate, Rachel Alexandra was prominent throughout, coasting three wide on the home turn before taking to the lead at the head of the stretch. In a seemingly effortless move, she surged clear of the chasing pack, which was headed by Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird. Despite the sloppy conditions, her run was just two-fifths of a second outside the track record for a mile and one-eighth.
Hailed as ‘a filly for the ages’, Rachel Alexandra formed the second leg of a Grade One double within an hour for the Darley stallions with Street Cry filly Seventh Street landing her second victory at the highest level in the Go For Wand Stakes at Saratoga.
The four-year-old, who was bred by Steve Barberino and races for Godolphin, won the Apple Blossom Handicap in April, following the lead of another talented Street Cry distaffer, the unbeaten Zenyatta, who won the same race in 2008.
Street Cry also had a G3 runner-up at Monmouth in the form of four-year-old filly Princess Haya.
