Champagne Tommie has twice hit the board in her short career, finishing runner-up on both occasions, and on Saturday went one better to record her first career win over five and a half furlongs (1100m) at Mountainer Race Track.
The daughter of Henny Hughes, who was bred in Kentucky by Richard Nip and Arbaway Farm, scored by a length and three-quarters. A $45,000 breeze-up purchase at Ocala in February, the filly is out of Champagne Sunset, by Gulch.
Freshman sire Henny Hughes got off the mark earlier this month when Dalamar won at Delaware Park. Saturday also saw his fellow Darley freshman Bernardini sire his second winner when Theyskens’ Theory posted an impressive five-length victory at Newmarket in the UK.
