Bernardini: Prudence and brilliance!

A statistical journey

We all know how tough a business ours can be. To get a winner, not that easy. To get a stakes horse, even tougher. To get a stakes winner, harder yet. But to get winners at G1, G2 and G3 levels, you have to have some luck, for sure, but you also have to have the goods. That's what you get with Bernardini. Since his first foals dropped in 2008, Bernardini has been a potent source for performers in the nation's top stakes races year after year and 2016 is no exception. His multiple G1 winner Cavorting carried his banner proudly this year and she is one of seven G1 performers for her sire in 2016, a feat that puts him just behind fellow elite sires Tapit and War Front, two stallions that stand for more than double Bernardini’s $100,000 fee:

Top stallions by G1 horses in 2016

Stallion

               2017 Fee

            G1H

Tapit             $300,000             10
War Front             $250,000              9
Bernardini             $100,000              7
Curlin             $150,000              7
Medaglia d'Oro             $150,000              6
Flatter               $35,000              6

Furthermore, success by his progeny on the surface on which he excelled as a racehorse further illustrates his propensity to produce top-class racehorses. No stallion has sired more G1 performers in 2016 on the dirt and only two – Tapit and Curlin – have equaled this accomplishment:

Stallion

              G1 Dirt Horses

Bernardini                         7
Tapit                         7
Curlin                         7
Medaglia d'Oro                         6
Flatter                         6

In addition, when looking at Bernardini’s overall number of Graded Stakes winners in the current year, he is among the nation’s elite sires yet again with only Tapit and War Front outperforming him:

Top stallions by GSWs in 2016

Stallion

               2017 Fee

            GSW

Tapit             $300,000             15
War Front             $250,000             11
Bernardini             $100,000             10
Uncle Mo             $150,000             10
Kitten's Joy             $100,000             10
Candy Ride               $60,000              8

Historically speaking, Bernardini also stacks up with the nation's best as the chart below exemplifies. Since 2010 (the year that Bernardini's first crop began racing), no stallion has sired more G1-winning juveniles. In fact, only War Front can match that feat and only the great Danzig was able to sire more high-level winning two-year-olds than Bernardini from six crops to race:

Stallion

                G1W

Bernardini                  5
War Front                  5
Giant's Causeway                  4
Tapit                  4
Medaglia d'Oro                  3

Before we end our statistical journey through the world of Bernardini, we'd like to leave you with just a few other stats and facts:

  • Only Tapit and Curlin can better his six G1 winners on dirt since 2013
  • He has seven TDN Rising Stars in 2016, more than any other stallion (Tapit is next with five)
  • He has a higher percentage of G1 winners, G1 horses, GS winners, and GS horses from both starters and foals than Malibu Moon
  • He has a higher percentage of GS winners from starters and GS winners from foals than Curlin
  • His five G1 winners at Saratoga since 2011 can’t be topped by any other stallion
  • He has 14 sons at stud, including young sires Stay Thirsty, Algorithms, To Honor and Serve, Biondetti, Wilburn, Alpha, etc.
  • His 2014-2016 combined yearling average is $264,000 which is fourth only to Tapit, War Front, and Medaglia d'Oro
  • His 2014-2016 combined 2YO average is $313,000 which is third only to Tapit and War Front
