$1.1 million Medaglia d’Oro colt is second-highest price at Keeneland

Yearlings by Darley sires were once again in high demand on Tuesday during the second session of Book One at the Keeneland September Sale, led by a $1,100,000 Medaglia d'Oro colt that was the second-highest price of the day.

A partnership consisting of Solis/Litt Bloodstock, Winchell Thoroughbreds, and Gainesway extended to $1,100,000 to secure hip 365, a colt by Medaglia d’Oro out of the multiple stakes-winning Lemon Drop Kid mare Kid Kate. The seven-figure colt was consigned by Lane’s End, agent, on behalf of his breeder, Dell Ridge Farm.

Later in the day, Mayberry Farm went to $600,000 for hip 445, a Medaglia d’Oro filly out of Meerkat Miss, by Giant’s Causeway, from the consignment of Paramount Sales, agent. The filly’s dam is a half-sister to G1 winners Hold That Tiger and Editor’s Note, as well as stakes winner Catnip, herself the dam of Medaglia d’Oro’s G3 winning colt Micromanage.

Spendthrift Farm took home a pair of Medaglia d’Oro colts for $400,000 and $500,000, respectively. The first was hip 245, a half-brother to multiple G1 winner and Horse of the Year Havre de Grace. Out of the Carson City mare Easter Bunnette, he was consigned by Mill Ridge Sales.

Spendthrift’s second Medaglia d’Oro purchase on the day was hip 338, a half-brother to G2 winner Millionreasonswhy as well as stakes winners Beyondallboundarys and Roundupthelute. A son of the stakes-winning A.P. Indy mare In Secure, he was consigned by Trackside Farm, agent for Tom Evans, Tenlane Farm, and Oratis et al.

Stonestreet Stables also got in on the action, acquiring a Medaglia d’Oro filly for $500,000. Hip 339 is a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro out of the multiple stakes-winning Unbridled’s Song mare Inspired, a full-sister to stakes winner and sire Silver City and a half-sister to two other stakes winners. She was consigned by Bridie Harrison, acting as agent for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds.

Altogether, Medaglia d’Oro had nine yearlings sell on day two for an average of over $450,000.

Bernardini continued to be popular as well, with six yearlings selling on day two for an average of $373,333.

Juddmonte Farms went to $575,000 to secure hip 434, a Bernardini colt out of Majestically, by Gone West. The colt is a half-brother to G2 winner Dust and Diamonds, and was consigned by Summerfield, agent for Stonestreet Farm.

Earlier in the day West Point Thoroughbreds purchased hip 270, a Bernardini filly out of the G3 winning Giant’s Causeway mare First Passage, for $550,000. The filly’s third dam is G3 winner Win Crafty Lady, who is the dam of G1 Ballerina winner Harmony Lodge, G2 Arkansas Derby winner Graeme Hall, and G3 winner Win McCool. The filly was consigned by Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent.

Also on day two, Gary Contessa, agent, went to $350,000 for hip 322, a Bernardini filly out of G1 Santa Monica Stakes winner Home Sweet Aspen, by Candy Ride, from the Gainesway consignment.

Another Darley stallion that made a splash on day two was Hard Spun, who had a couple of six-figure colts on the day. Calumet Farm acquired hip 441 for $320,000 from the Taylor Made Sales consignment. The Hard Spun colt is out of Marquet Rent, by Marquetry, and is a half-brother to stakes winner Dashing Derby and G2-placed Hopeful Image.

William L. Clifton Jr. purchased hip 344, a colt by Hard Spun out of the stakes-placed Lomitas mare Isobel Baillie, for $250,000. From the family of G1 winner Campanologist, the colt was consigned by Taylor Made Sales on behalf of his breeder, Siena Farm LLC.
