Cassis Violeta displayed an impressive turn of foot as she rolled to a commanding two-and-three-quarter length victory in the G1 Premio Arturo Lyon Pena at Club Hipico de Santiago on Friday, 28 June.
Already a Graded Stakes winner by virtue of her win in the G3 Clasico Cotejo de Potrancas in April, the juvenile daughter of Midshipman has now won three of her five starts and has never finished worse than second.
Confidently ridden by Jorge Gonzalez, Cassis Violeta was settled well off the pace early, content to track the leaders from fifth through the early stages of the race. As the field entered the homestretch Cassis Violeta made her move and hit another gear, quickly sweeping from fifth to first in just a few strides. She continued to draw off in the stretch, eventually crossing the wire an easy winner.
Cassis Violeta was bred in Chile by Haras Don Alberto and is the third foal and third winner out of the Henrythenavigator mare, Cristolina. Cassis Violeta hails from the immediate family of Champions and full-siblings Crystal Clear (Champion 3-year-old filly in Chile, G1 Las Oaks) and Crystal House (Chilean Horse of the Year, Champion 3-year-old filly, G1 El Ensayo-Chilean Derby).
Cassis Violeta becomes the second Group 1 winner of the week for her sire, Midshipman, whose son, Gran Dali, captured the G1 Clasico Alberto Vial over this same course June 23. In addition, Midshipman is also the sire of 2024 Oaklawn Park Stakes winner Midshipman's Dance and is also represented by 12 other worldwide Stakes horses. He also has the distinction of being the only stallion with multiple juvenile Stakes winners at Saratoga in 2023 – two-time Stakes winner, Amidst Waves and Ship Cadet.
