Lewis Bay much the best in G3 Bed o’ Roses

Daughter of Bernardini dominates at Belmont

Bernardini’s five-year-old daughter Lewis Bay pulled away in the stretch to win the seven-furlong G3 Bed o’ Roses Stakes by a widening six lengths at Belmont Park on June 8.

The win was the fifth lifetime Graded Stakes victory for Lewis Bay, who had previously notched successes in the G2 Demoiselle as a juvenile, the G2 Gazelle and G3 Turnback the Alarm as a three-year-old, and the G3 Rampart last year as a four-year-old.  In her two most recent starts in 2018, she finished third in both the G1 Madison and G1 Humana Distaff.

Breaking alertly under Irad Ortiz Jr., Lewis Bay sat in second down the backstretch before moving to the front around the turn and pulling away through the stretch to come home six lengths clear over a field that included two G1 winners in American Gal and Union Strike.

Racing as a homebred for Alpha Delta Stables, Lewis Bay is out of the Summer Squall mare Summer Raven, winner of the G3 Tempted Stakes.  She is a half-sister to Winslow Homer, winner of the G3 Holy Bull Stakes, and Misconnect, winner of the G3 General George Stakes.

Lewis Bay is one of 18 Graded Stakes winners on dirt since 2015 for Bernardini, a total that can only be matched by Tapit.

Bernardini is standing the 2018 season at Jonabell Farm for a fee of $85,000.
