Medaglia d’Oro heads the roster of 14 stallions that will stand at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky and Sequel Stallions in New York
Darley’s 2016 roster of stallions in America will once again be led by Medaglia d’Oro, one of the world’s elite stallions who has now sired 14 lifetime G1 winners. Songbird and Mshawish have both been victorious at the highest level this year and will aim for further G1 glory in this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup in the Juvenile Fillies and Mile respectively. Medaglia d’Oro has three further runners at Championship weekend in Sentiero Italia (Filly & Mare Turf), Yahilwa (Distaff) and Valid (Dirt Mile). Strong demand for his yearlings continued in 2015, exemplified by his $1.1 million dollar colt at Keeneland September. His fee has been set at $150,000.
Bernardini has rewarded his supporters with arguably his best year at stud, siring four G1 winners (second only to Tapit), all of whom are headed to the Breeders’ Cup. Two-year-old sensation Rachel’s Valentina will take on Songbird in the Juvenile Fillies; upstart two-year-old colt Greenpointcrusader takes on the best of his division in the Juvenile; while Dame Dorothy and Cavorting, along with G2 winner Fioretti, meet in the Filly & Mare Sprint. Bernardini, who has the highest cumulative two-year-old average from 2011-2015, was also responsible for America’s highest-priced yearling filly of 2015 at $1.5 million. Bernardini’s fee will be $100,000.
Hard Spun and Street Sense also both have runners in this year’s Breeders’ Cup and will stand for $45,000 each. Each of Hard Spun’s three 2015 G1 winners will head to Keeneland with the improving Smooth Roller, winner of the recent G1 Awesome Again Stakes, heading to the power-packed Classic along with Hard Aces; while two-time 2015 G1 winner Hard Not to Like will go in the Filly & Mare Turf. 2014 G1 winner Wicked Strong goes in the Dirt Mile while the hugely progressive Big John B heads to the Turf. Street Sense’s daughter Wedding Toast, who has won consecutive G1s in the Ogden Phipps and Beldame, will line up in the Distaff.
Animal Kingdom, the Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup winner who finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, has his first foals selling at Keeneland next week. His fee remains at $35,000.
G1 winner Girolamo has risen to the top tier of this year’s freshmen, with 14 winners so far, including TDN Rising Star and G1-placed She’s All Ready. Now in Kentucky after beginning his career at Sequel Stallions in New York, Girolamo’s fee will be $15,000.
No fewer than 22 Darley America-sired runners are due to appear at Keeneland this weekend, a list that also includes Holy Boss in the Sprint (by Street Boss, $12,500), Lady Shipman in the Turf Sprint (Midshipman, $8,500); and Salama in the Distaff (Desert Party, $4,000). Desert Party will be standing at Sequel Stallions in New York along with Bernardini’s G1-winning son Alpha ($8,500) and fellow G1 winner Emcee ($5,000).
