Naval Command takes command in Gulfstream Maiden Special Weight

Midshipman filly wins first time out

It only seems appropriate that Midshipman filly Naval Command absolutely took command in her first start June 21. After two strong bullet works, the two-year-old filly was sent off as the 9-5 favorite in the Gulfstream Maiden Special Weight. In the four-and-one-half-furlong race Naval Command traveled along the inside moving well. At the three-sixteenths pole she made her final push and surged to prove much the best.

Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Naval Command is out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Lucky Flyer, whose dam is Stakes winner Beautiful Crazy. The family traces to G1 Kentucky Oaks winner Lucky Lucky Lucky.

Naval Command marks the third winner for freshman sire Midshipman, who won the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and G1 Del Mar Futurity before being crowned Eclipse Champion Two-Year-Old. The sire's other winners are two other debut winners, Sunny Yellow and Her Majesty's Flag.

Midshipman stands for $7,500, live foal, stands and nurses.
