Lonhro begins 2014 with a bang

Bounding claims first G1 of the new year in the Railway Stakes in New Zealand

Lonhro has begun 2014 in the best possible way with his three-year-old daughter Bounding defeating the older horses in the first G1 of the year, the 1200m Railway Stakes at Ellerslie in New Zealand, January 1.

In a real triumph for Darley, Bounding also provided Exceed And Excel with his first G1 winner as a broodmare sire with the Lonhro filly being out of the Darley-bred Believe ‘N’ Succeed, a G3 winner from the first crop of Exceed And Excel.

Already twice a runner-up at the elite level including a luckless second as a short-priced favourite in the G1 1000 Guineas at her previous start, Bounding began brilliantly in the Railway Stakes and was never headed, running out a convincing winner. She continues to build an imposing record having had nine starts now for six wins and three second placings.

Bred by Michael Birchall, Bounding is the first foal out of Believe ‘N’ Succeed who is full sister to G2 winner Kuroshio and Listed winner Agulhas.

Bounding is the sixth G1 winner for Lonhro who is also the sire of G1-winning speedster Denman who will join his sire at Jonabell this breeding season. Lonhro will stand the coming season at a fee of $30,000 while Denman will stand his debut season at $15,000.
