Quiet American, now enjoying his retirement at Jonabell, stood at Gainsborough Stud from 1991 to 2006, but was relocated along with Elusive Quality, when Sheikh Mohammed’s brother, Sheikh Maktoum, passed away in 2006.
Bred in Florida by Tartan Farms Corp, Quiet American was purchased for $300,000 at the 1987 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale by Darley.
Lightly raced at two and three, it was at four that he really excelled, winning the G1 NYRA Mile Handicap and the G3 San Diego Handicap, and finishing second in the G1 Woodward Handicap and the G1 Charles H. Strub Stakes.
As a stallion, Quiet American achieved early success with a first crop that included Champion older female Hidden Lake and a third crop that produced Real Quiet, who came agonizingly close to winning the Triple Crown in 1998 when beaten just a nose in the Belmont Stakes.
Quiet American's other major performers included G1 winners Switch, Seattle Smooth, and Cara Rafaela. Switch sold for no less than $4.3 million at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Sale.
As a broodmare sire, Quiet American's is represented by such successful runners as champion and leading sire Bernardini (who currently stands at Jonabell) and Horse of the Year Saint Liam.
